Now, September signifies the start of a new sartorial season; the time of year to rethink, refresh and re-imagine. It is no coincidence that the September issue of Vogue is the most anticipated and most widely circulated of the year.
This particular new season grants permission to fling open the wardrobe, dress up and celebrate. After all, we have a lot of catching up to do. Hand-sanitiser and face mask are the latest “must-haves” on the “before-we-leave-the-house -checklist”, but what are the new must-have trends for Fall-Winter 2021?
The extreme circumstances of the pandemic seems to have inspired designers to be equally extreme with their designs. Knitwear is huge and to the max. Minis are miniscule. Puffer jackets the size of duvets, look like giant cocoons. Sequins are on steroids with head-to-toe layering. Chunky boots, power platforms and big cushiony sandals will adorn fashion souls’ soles. Jewellery will party like never before, with oversized hoops and layer upon layer of neck candy. Arm candy, will make way for superlong sleeves. Or maybe not. Suiting is strong, the plaid game is stronger.
I ADORE the frivolity of fashion but I’ll never be its slave. Rather I will take inspiration from the glossy pages and interpret the trends to suit my existing wardrobe, my budget and my style.
Here, I’ve shopped my wardrobe, (and my husband’s), to showcase my interpretation of my favourite new season trends.
More is more jewellery
I bought some of these pieces for my recent honeymoon, but everything works together beautifully for the season’s more-is-more approach to jewellery. My white dress can assume the guise of a winter white dress and I’ll add a cosy knit or jacket when the temperature drops. The gold jewellery contrasts beautifully with the eyewear, (model SI-20104 F210), and shows off the delicate grey front and subtle gold sides.
Not so subtle sequins
My sequinned tuxedo has been a party staple for several seasons now. The silver and black camisole with its larger sequins adds even more texture and shine for a celebratory look that’s bang up to date. Model SI-20104 F920 is strong enough to hold its own; it isn’t out-dazzled by the sequins.
Knit-picking
My husband’s Christmas jumper manages to tick not one, but three trend boxes: après-ski, over-sized knitwear and extra-long sleeves. I’m glad I married him. The beautiful burgundy colour of eyewear model SI-50242 F039 may be subtle, but it’s very, very effective.
Check mate
This was one of my favourite work suits. Because of the pandemic, we now don scrubs, something that’s unlikely to change. So I’m delighted that both plaid and suiting are back in a big way. This tartan trouser suit can continue to earn its keep. The warm gold titanium finish on model SI-50242 F013 is the perfect desk to dinner style.
