Siu - Discoveries at MIDO 2019

STEPPERS is the cool, hip range for millennials and beyond. The design and energy behind the collection is an evolution from their ancestor's STEPPER. I say evolution because STEPPER is more about using the latest technology and being conservative but STEPPERS has got the cool tech, cool designs and cool colours to go with it.

So, I saw the latest collection at MIDO, did STEPPERS deliver? YES is the answer. They did not disappoint. I loved all the shapes they had on offer and most of all, I LOVED the colours. They were on point. I think anyone who is aware of STEPPER as a brand, that then sees the new STEPPERS range, their jaw will drop to the floor. STEPPERS is nothing like their ancestors. The colours are punchy, bold and bright but of course, you do have some more muted and less daring colours to choose from too.

I also loved the coloured metal within the collection. I have always said this; normally, I am not a fan of metal frames but these are something else. They come in a wide range of colours and the cut out detailing also gives them a twist. I am 100% sold on them.

STEPPER is known for using a particular type of plastic, the TX5 also known as injection moulding. Using this type of plastic allows STEPPER to be very creative and playful with colours. One of my favorite from this new range is the bright sky blue (please see images). A thin layer of metal is wrapped around the plastic rim of the frame so looking at it straight on, it just looks like a plastic frame. I love the fact the plastic is so bright and works so well against the dark grey metal which is on show between the brows and halfway down the temples. The contrast between the two colours really gives the whole frame a modern, urban vibe.

So, on the subject of plastic. It is a hot topic at the moment. It is also a subject I care about. The eyewear industry as a whole does produce a lot of it and did you know there is a lot of wastage in producing an acetate frame? That is why many eyewear brands who use acetate also make jewelry or keyrings as by-products from the acetate. Now, this is the interesting thing about STEPPER that even I didn’t really know about. By using TX5 and using an injection moulding method to produce the frames, the wastage is actually very minimal in comparison to acetate.

I think explaining the STEPPER production method and why it produces less waste will be a whole other blog post for another time because it is quite an in-depth process to explain. However, if you are interested then stay tuned for my future post.

All in all, a massive thumbs up from me on the new STEPPERS range. I am so in love with the colours they have on offer, they are even more daring than the last range. What I saw at the show could be at an optician near you soon. It all depends on what the distributor in your country has selected.

Another fun fact for you about STEPPER as a company. STEPPER only produce samples for a trade show like MIDO. I saw 150 different styles but distributors from each country will pick what they feel will sell for their market. At the end of the show, whichever styles got picked the most, will be put into production. Again, this is another clever way of reducing waste. The sad thing is, everything I saw at MIDO may not make it into production for the mass market. I have my fingers crossed that the bright sky blue frame will make the cut because I love them and I need them in my life.
